Empagliflozin is an antidiabetic medication used to treat type 2 diabetes by lowering blood sugar levels. It belongs to the class of medications called sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, and works by preventing the absorption of glucose in the kidneys. Empagliflozin is sold under the brand name Jardiance and is taken orally. It is not recommended for use in type 1 diabetes. Empagliflozin can cause side effects such as increased urination, dehydration, and low blood pressure.
