Kegalle is a large town in Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka, located on the Colombo-Kandy road. The town has an agricultural-based economy and mainly produces rubber, graphite, and precious stones. The surrounding area produces agricultural products such as rice. Kegalle is famous for being the nearest town to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, a major tourist attraction in the area. Apart from this, there are two other organizations working on elephant welfare. Kegalle is situated between the central highlands and western southern plains, with the height of the western region at 50m above sea level while the eastern region exceeds 1,800m.
