About 30% of the population is affected by hypermobility, and around 10% of them experience symptoms. Hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD) are connective tissue disorders that cause joint hypermobility, instability, injury, and pain. Diagnosis of hypermobility syndrome is typically done using the Beighton score and Brighton criteria. Treatment usually focuses on improving muscle strength and fitness to protect the joints. It is advised not to train to fatigue in order to prevent further instability. Overall, hypermobility can have various systemic symptoms and affect daily functioning.
